It is very important for the life of your new roof that the flashings are installed properly. Most if not all leaks on a roof are likely originating around some sort of penetration surrounded by the flashing. Unfortunately most people take the easy out and try a "quick fix" by applying some sort of sealant which may be tar or caulking. Although this may work temporarily in the short term, the only long term solution to a flashing problem is to remove all the old flashing and install new metal. AA Roofing installs all new forty pound terne metal or copper flashings on all reroofing jobs. All of the seams are soldered to insure that the flashing will last the as long, and in most cases, longer than the shingles on your roof. There are very few roofing contractors that are willing or even able to solder the seams on their flashings properly. Why? Because soldering a chimney properly requires a lot more time and A LOT more skill than putting caulk in a tube and squirting it on some metal. Soldering a seam requires a roofer to first "sweat" the seam with the solder and a soldering iron, and then come back and "lace" the seam with solder insuring that the solder penetrates both pieces of metal, insuring a lifetime bond between both pieces of metal that (when done properly), will never leak. This skill takes a long time to learn and years to perfect. Unfortunately, not too many roofers are ever taught this skill and perform a disservice to countless unsuspecting homeowners. So please, insist on having all flashings properly soldered by a professional roofing contractor when replacing your roof or repairing your flashings.
